Harpoon Louie’s American Pub & Grill was started in the late 80s by Karl Sigren and Ben Baggett, and slowly evolved from a dive bar to a late-night hangout spot. When Karl became the sole owner in 1992 he turned it into the family-owned quintessential neighborhood pub that it is today.
David Witt, Gary Kuehner, and Justin Watkins, three best friends and longtime customers of Harpoon Louie’s, took over ownership of the restaurant from Karl on April 1, 2006.
David worked at Harpoon Louie’s as a server and kitchen manager during his time in culinary school, and then went on to continue training as a chef in the Caribbean. After returning to Jacksonville in 2002, David had the opportunity to join a partnership at a new restaurant called Henrietta’s.
After a few successful years at Henrietta’s, David decided it was time to move on. He returned to Harpoon Louie’s and worked there for a few months before Karl offered the trio to take over the restaurant.
In 2018 we shortened our name to Harps, what our regulars have affectionately called us for years. But we still and will ALWAYS answer to, and identify as Harpoon Louie's :)
Justin has since walked away to pursue his career as a lineman and Gary has continued his silent ownership while working as a fire chief for JFRD. David, Gary, and Justin remain friends to this day.
While growing our small business, David and Gary also grew their families. David and his wife Melody have two daughters Georgia and Evelyn, and Gary and his wife Megan have one daughter, Lily.
During our 20 years of ownership we have stayed true to the restaurant Karl created while also continuing to improve and put our own stamp on it.
We consider ourselves stewards of this establishment by staying true to its roots while improving and growing with our clientele. Once we pass the baton on, we hope the next owner will continue in the same way.
